LE SQUARE JEAN XXIII / JOHN XXIII GARDEN
The land that ran along the Notre Dame was held up in the 1830s by the Archbishop's Palace. Famous for its beauty, the grandeur of its parts and its garden designed by Thouin, unfortunately he was sacked by the anti-riot Legitimists of February 14, 1831. Destroyed, he was replaced by a garden in 1837. In 1850, Viollet-Le-Duc and Lassus built the rectory and the sacristy of the Cathedral of Notre Dame, which adjoins the garden. Count Rambuteau, prefect of the Seine from 1833 to 1848, was responsible for creating the present garden. Completed in 1844, was the first public park in the area. It required the demolition of insanitary houses dating from the Middle Ages, which still characterized Paris at that time. Such destruction strongly decried in their time have helped to highlight Notre Dame who stifled since 1163, crushed by the proximity of other houses. This garden is full of cherry trees from Japan with coppery bark and exceptional blooms white and pink, which compete with the apple blossoms. Almost joined to Notre Dame, a hazel Byzantium faced the limes with large silver leaves. They surround "The Fountain of the Virgin" by Hale (1845), whose gothic style blends beautifully with serrated cathedral stone. A curtain of ivy (Hedera helix) lining the walls of the walls that plunge towards the Seine. Weeping elm disturbing the silhouette and cherry interfere between flower beds, lawns flanked covering the four corners of yews in the shape of a cone. You will also see horse chestnut trees, silk trees, common charms, spruces, tamarisk.
